Additional Information
Our Storyteller: Travis La Marche Operations Manager & Corporate Destination Manager Trainer
Travis is our Operations Manager & Corporate Destination Manager Trainer — a big title that basically means he supports our Destinations team at sea and our Product Managers in Seattle. It’s a role he’s well trained for with a decade of experience at sea and over 15 years of experience in the industry in a variety of areas from product development to public speaking. He’s a good listener, too.
Number of Windstar itineraries sailed: “Too many to count! I’ve visited every region that Windstar currently sails.”
Favorite thing to do onboard: “Head up to the Yacht Club first thing in the morning for a coffee and to watch the ship’s arrival into port. I also enjoy talking with guests out on deck in the morning and discussing their plans for the day.”
Hobby: “Riding my motorcycle and exploring different parts of the Canadian wilderness and the Pacific Northwest.”
Favorite part of his job: “My favorite part of my job is meeting and talking to guests, hearing why they love sailing with Windstar, and listening to their stories about past experiences and adventures.”
The Story
While Travis La Marche has crisscrossed nearly all of Northern Europe, the North Atlantic region’s dramatic topography always stops him in his trail boots. “These remote landscapes are actually quite distinct,” he says, “with everything from lush greenery to barren volcanic terrain.” There’s the take-your-breath-away beauty of Norway’s Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; and the rugged, wild Shetland with her miniature ponies and heather moorlands. It’s here where you’ll find Jarlshof, an amazing archaeological site with 4,000 years of human history on display; while hundreds of prehistoric monuments — including the UNESCO-designated Skara Brae and Ring of Brodgar — lie sprinkled across the Orkneys’ pastoral grazing lands. The Faroe Islands are even further isolated, leaving only nesting puffins and a few intrepid adventurers to admire Europe’s tallest sea cliffs.
Amidst all this natural splendor sits lively Bergen, whose colorful, Hanseatic wharf earned UNESCO status; as well as the art nouveau town of Alesund, where Travis prefers to “just sit down in an inviting café and people watch.” Add a few extra days in Reykjavik, he says, and you’ll “fully experience some of the most beautiful, rugged areas in the world by land and by sea.”
Insider Tips
Take advantage of an overnight in Bergen to “truly appreciate its Hanseatic history,” leisurely strolling along the old Bryggen pier and lingering over dinner in one of its beautifully preserved wooden merchant houses.
Go hiking in the remote Faroe Islands or take a boat trip to Vestmanna Cliffs, home to thousands of nesting seabirds.
Feel the misty spray of Geirangerfjord’s Seven Sisters Waterfall on a guided kayaking tour or RIB adventure — “Back at the dock, take the Fossevandring staircase up to the town’s waterfall and a lookout point with fantastic views over Geiranger.”
Sample 12-year-old Scotch on a tour of the world’s most northerly whisky distillery in Kirkwall, or join the locals for a “wee dram” at one of the town’s many pubs like Helgi’s and Torvhaug.
Float in the therapeutic waters of the renowned Blue Lagoon near Reykjavik — Travis recommends stopping on the way to the airport: “You’ll board your flight completely relaxed and ready to sleep.”

From the Firth of Forth, a UNESCO site, to the Royal Mile, Edinburgh is steeped in history. Edinburgh Castle. The Royal Botanic Gardens. The UNESCO site of Old Town. The wonders of Edinburgh are never ending. From one of Europe's best-preserved castles to the world's longest herbaceous border, a riot of color and culture pervades. In this city as old as Scotland itself, you'll find the perfect blend of historic tradition and natural beauty

Everything about Orkney is olde, from the 5,000-year-old village of Skara Brae (the "Scottish Pompeii") to the peat-distilled whisky at Highland Park to the UNESCO site of the Ring of Brodgar, dating back to 2700 B.C. Even the local brogue hints at times past, accented by the area's Viking legacy.

Molde, Marble Caves & Atlantic Ocean Road
Enjoy a magical visit to the magnificent Bergtatt Marble Caves . After a 45-minute scenic drive north your adventure will begin on board a small, open-air boat taking you deep into the glistening caves, crisscrossing an underground lake. The caves are decorated with beautiful lighting reflecting on the water, giving you a mystical experience. Your knowledgeable guide will inform you of the mining operations which were active from 1938-1987. You will also see a short film of how this marble mine is still operating in other parts of the mountain. During your visit you will have time to capture photos of this unique marble cavern. Continuing on by motor coach you will pass the village of Eide before entering one of the masterpieces of Norwegian engineering, the Atlantic Ocean Road . The road workers experienced 12 hurricanes during construction of the road before it was opened in 1989. In a distance of 5 miles, 8 different bridges have been built from islet to islet connecting Averøya Island with the mainland. Your scenic drive will conclude along the Moldefjorden on your way back to Molde and the ship. Please note : Walking is very limited, however guests must be able to embark transportation both for the motor coach and the boat independently.
Molde, Molde Highlights
Molde, Molde Highlights
Just minutes from the pier is the cathedral of Molde, a double-nave basilica built in 1957 that has a free-standing bell tower next to the main building. Spend about 20 minutes appreciating its architecture, the roses surrounding the church bell tower and the flowers blooming on the terraced hillside before continuing to the Romsdalen Open Air Museum, among Norway's largest regional museums, founded in 1912. You will see an open-air museum with houses, all furnished and equipped according to their respective ages, showing the development of the farmers' culture from the 17th to the 20th century. Leaving the museum, stop at Varden Viewpoint en route to your yacht. Located on the mountainside 1,300 feet above Molde, this vintage point affords magnificent panoramas of the fjords and Romsdal Alps. Please note: Dress in layered clothing and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Your tour will continue to the fishing village of Bud, where you will have a photo stop then pass by the Church of Bud, built in 1717, before returning to Molde. Please note : Places of interest may be visited in a reverse order.

Dock within walking distance of Old Town and marvel at a place where people mow their roofs and 17th century buildings are considered young. Listen to echoes of Old Norse in the language of shopkeepers and passersby as you shop for warm knit sweaters made from the islands' distinctive wool.
Torshavn: Island Of Vagar
Torshavn: Island Of Vagar
You will leave Streymoy Island via Kaldbakfjord and the Kollafjørdur Valley , then pass through the new underwater tunnel and, 5 minutes later, arrive on Vagar Island. You will appreciate Vagar's ever-changing scenery and will have time explore its villages. Your guide will tell you about the island, its history and about life here today. Drive through the village of Sandavágur, where you'll visit the Midvágur Church , and pass the largest lake in the Faroe Islands before reaching Vatnsoyrar. In Bøur , you'll discover a little village with both old and new houses with green sod roofs and a charming old tar-blackened church . From there take in the spectacular view of Tindholmur and Mykines Islands beyond. You'll leave Bour through the tunnel to Gasadalur-Vagar's westernmost village, then return to Tórshavn via the mountain road to capture the extraordinary panoramic views out over the fjords and the capital. Please note : There are small hills and steps on most of the stops. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
Torshavn: Vestmanna Sea Cliffs
Torshavn: Vestmanna Sea Cliffs
Ride by coach to the village of Vestmanna . Here, you will board a boat and head out to the famous bird cliffs . All your senses will awaken with the sound of sea birds, the salty scent of the sea and its cool spray on your face, the stunning, weather-beaten cliff formations and the raucous riot of squawking birds who call the sea cliffs home. You'll cruise along the cliff wall, into a narrow gorge where sheer rock walls rise vertically on both sides towards the sky. The boat slowly enters one of the many grottoes , and for a moment, daylight disappears. Darkness and the sound of dripping water surround you and then, suddenly, you emerge on the other side. The boat stops for a while so you can enjoy the scenery. Take photographs to help you remember the details. After the boat trip, return to Tórshavn via the mountain road and stop at the viewpoint looking over the capital. Please note : There are 4-5 steps to board the boat and the tour travels along a winding scenic mountain road.

Torshavn: Coastal Villages
Torshavn: Coastal Villages
Your first stop will be in Kollafjørður where you will visit an old Faroese church with a traditional, Faroese turf roof. On our way farther north, we head toward the village of Saksun , tucked away at the end of the road. As you get closer to Saksun, surprising vistas will delight you around each twist in the road. Then, there it is - one of the most distinctive villages in the Faroes. The old farm, Dúvugarðar , is now a national heritage museum, and, together with the outbuildings that belong to the museum, it provides an intimate look into past rural life in the Faroes. The round bay below the farm was at one time a natural harbor. Today, although sand deposits have made its waters shallow and only accessible to small boats at high tide, it is the centerpiece of a spectacular panorama. You will return to Tórshavn via the mountain road and stop at the viewpoint overlooking the capital. Please note : There are 3-4 steps to enter the different venues and a small hill up to the museum in Saksun.
Torshavn: Scenic Faroes
Torshavn: Scenic Faroes
From Tórshavn, take a 45-minute drive to the north, past idyllic villages and the old whaling station at Áir . The only bridge over the Atlantic , as it is sometimes called, spans the narrow channel of Sundini to connect Eysturoy with the larger island of Streymoy . Because the channel is so narrow, spectacular eddies form at the base of the bridge when the current is running strongly with the tide. You will pass Eiði and cross the mountains to Gjógv . On the way, you are treated to a view of the Giant and the Hag -two very distinctive sea stacks that your imagination will have fun with. You'll also pass the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur (2,983 feet) and see the rather handy Gjógv Gorge which, at 616-feet long, provides a marvelous natural harbor for the local fishing fleet to shelter in. Stop in the village of Gjógv , at the local guesthouse, to enjoy refreshments of coffee and tea with pancakes . The ride back to Tórshavn is via the mountain road and you will stop at the viewpoint overlooking the capital. Please note : This tour travels along a scenic mountain road.

The world's most northerly capital enjoys almost 24-hour sunlight in summer, all the better to show off the city's eclectic architecture and dazzling natural wonders. Soak in the milky Blue Lagoon, visit Guilfoss Waterfall, find Pingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , or explore the surprisingly vibrant local museum and art scene.
