Additional Information
The Story
Placed like a stepping-stone between the boot of Italy and the tip of Tunisia, Sicily has been in a cultural tug of war for centuries. Its location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean has attracted merchants, invaders, and immigrants. First the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans. Then Byzantines, Arabs, and Vikings. Finally, Normans, Germans, and Spaniards. In the process, these diverse cultures have seasoned everything from the island’s language to its cuisine. Part European, part African, it’s still Italy, only with cacti and palm trees, souk-like markets, couscous and saffron.
The fertile volcanic soil supports hillside groves of olives, almonds, pistachios, oranges, and lemons. Historic ruins are everywhere. And encircling it all are over 280 beaches, from stunning black to velvety white to Lipari’s silvery-gray. But of all the attractions you’ll find here (and there are many), one of the best is Sicily’s authenticity. The island is what Italy used to be, and as we visit smaller ports like Xlendi and Porto Empedocle and get to know the people, you’ll find it hard to pick a favorite.
Insider Tips
• Street food is very popular in Sicily and it can give you a real taste of the island’s multicultural background. The cuisine is different than mainland Italy’s, and blends both European and African influences. Rice balls, eggplant, pasta, fava beans—the flavors are varied and delicious.
• Sicily has some of the best ancient Greek ruins outside of Greece, from temples to theaters where the acoustics still astound scientists today. Some of the best are at the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento, and the theaters in Taormina and Ancient Syracuse.
• Most businesses in Sicily take a siesta in the afternoon, often lasting from 1:00 until 4 or 5. Plan ahead if you plan to do any shopping.
• Sicily is not flat, in fact it’s 85 percent hills and mountains. There are also lots of stairs and uneven cobblestones. So bring your best walking shoes if you’re going to explore on foot.
• If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path day trip from Catania, consider the baroque towns of the Val di Noto. These UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Noto Valley were all rebuilt in a unique late Baroque style after an earthquake in 1693.

In this enchanting city the past and present intersect in perfect harmony. Casually intermingled among ancient ruins and majestic cathedrals are the trappings of a modern metropolis: Skyscrapers, cafes, boutiques selling designer footwear. But of course what you seek first in the heart of Rome is its breathtaking history. A good place to begin is the Vatican, with its Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Works by Bernini, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Raphael are just a few of those on display, any one of which is worth hours of contemplation. Then the ancient ruins-Colosseum, Forum, Circus Maximus. And of course the Trevi Fountain for the obligatory coins promising your return to the Eternal City.

Rich in both Greek and Roman history and home of the mathematician Archimedes, Syracuse is full of ancient ruins including the Roman Amphitheater, Teatro Greco, and the Orecchio di Dionisio. The Ortigia, or Old Town is full of sites to see like the Ortigia Cathedral which houses a number of relics of St. Lucy, the patron saint of Syracuse.

Valletta, Mdina's Noble Heritage

Valletta, Mdina's Noble Heritage
Depart the quay and drive to The Silent City - Mdina , Malta's old Capital. Mdina is a medieval walled town situated on a hill in the center of the island. You will walk through the narrow streets of the town, visit St Paul's Cathedral , the Ramparts for a panoramic view, and Palazzo Falson , the best preserved palazzo of its period. Walk down any Maltese street in the town core, with its sheer limestone walls, studded doors and wooden 'gallarijas', and you will get few clues to what lies on the other side of these crumbling facades. Casa Bernard is a perfect example as its sober and imposing facade in the Mannerist 16th century architectural idiom reminiscent of Gerolamo Cassar betrays nothing of the calm, classic beauty that lies within. This walk usually lasts no more than 20 minutes at a slow pace. This is when Casa Bernard starts to shine, as apart from the beauty of its architecture one enjoys the many beautiful pieces of art both ancient and modern. Please note : To enter the Cathedral, guests must have their knees covered, no stiletto heels and no bare shoulders. Walking involves cobblestone streets and climbing steps so this tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility.
Valletta & Three Cities Boat Ride *

Continue with a drive through the Three Cities - Senglea, Cospicua, and Vittoriosa. Left largely unvisited, the Three Cities will show you a slice of authentic life, and a glimpse into Malta's maritime fortunes. The Three Cities can rightly claim to be the cradle of Maltese history. Take a short walking tour then embark on traditional Maltese 'Dghajsas' for a 20 - minute boat trip around the harbor, crossing over to the Waterfront Laguna . Please note : To enter the Cathedral, guests must have their knees covered, no stiletto heels and no bare shoulders.

Pretty Xlendi Bay lies on the west coast of Gozo, an island long thought to be the mythical Ogygia of Homer's Odyssey. In the story, Calypso fell in love with Odysseus and held him captive for seven years.. The reputed Calypso Cave is just one of several intriguing caves on the island. There's also Caroline's Cave, a natural grotto that was once a private swimming hole for nuns. Surprisingly for such a small island, Gozo is home to the oldest freestanding temples in the world, the Ggantija Temples, nestled among the rolling green hills. You should also visit the Citadella, a small, fortified town that houses the island's Cathedral, the Museum of Archaeology, the Folklore Museum, and the Old Prisons.

At once ancient and contemporary, Trapani is a city of contrasts. From the salt marshes that produce much of the Mediterranean's signature colored salts, to the intricate mosaics of Mozia and the famous wines of Marsala, to the best view in all of Sicily from the medieval hill town of Erice where the colorful gardens are rivaled only by the cannolis for pure sensory delight. The line of 17th century windmills, still hard at work in ancient Phoenician salt marshes beckons you to return to Trapani again and again.
Trapani, Walking Tour with Sicilian Coffee Break *

Trapani, Walking Tour with Sicilian Coffee Break *
Trapani is an attractive old port town, rediscovering its charms after years of neglect. Halfway between Europe and Tunis, it was a rich trading center throughout the early Middle Ages, then, flourished again in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a stronghold of the tuna-canning industry. After that, it went into decline, and became a salty old port. Then, it was selected to host the 2004 America's Cup and received a massive injection of cash - buildings were restored, streets in the historic center pedestrianized - giving the town and its people a new confidence. These days Trapani is a thoroughly pleasant place to hang out for a couple of days. You will join your guide for a pleasant walking visit of the historical center of Trapani, with its many churches and palazzos with their ornate façades and elaborate interior, perfect examples of the Baroque style. At the end of the guided visit, enjoy a typical Sicilian coffee break including one cannolo and one coffee or one cappuccino, followed by 45 minutes of free time. At the conclusion of your tour you can leisurely walk back to the pier with your guide or continue to spend time in town returning to the ship on your own. Please note : Wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen. Proper attire that covers shoulders and knees is required for both men and women to enter religious venues. This tour is not suitable for those with walking difficulties because of the many stairs and slopes to climb.

The island of Vulcano, once called Hierò Thermessa is one of the most interesting in the Aeolian archipelago because of the exceptional nature of its landscapes and the variety of its landscapes and the variety of its volcanic phenomena. Your tour will begin with a boat trip around the island with a breathtaking view of the Faraglioni ,Grotta del Cavallo, and Vulcanello . The only landing place is the Porto di Levante. Vulcano consists of three old craters. The first, in the south between Monte Aria and Monte Saraceno, has been extinct for centuries; the GranCratere , on the other hand, is still active, the last eruption occurring in 1890. Vulcanello, the third crater, is a promontory on the north eastern tip of the island created almost 2,000 years ago by an eruption. The climb up to the middle crater is particularly interesting and you can reach the top in less than an hour. Please note: The hike to the volcano is only recommended for fit people as a lot of uphill walking is involved. Wear walking shoes, bring a change of clothes and bottled water.

Sorrento, Herculaneum *

Sorrento, Herculaneum *
The city of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded around the 4th century B.C., copying the geometric regularity of the layout of Naples. Its "decumani" (main streets) have an east-west orientation, while the "cardines" (narrower streets) run north-south. There is undeniably a "feeling" about Herculaneum, quite different from Pompeii, where you get the impression that its ancient population of 5,000 packed up and left only moments ago. Herculaneum was smaller than Pompeii but is better preserved simply because, while hot ashes consumed the wood of Pompeii's buildings, Herculaneum was covered by hot mud which sealed and protected entire city blocks. This means that marble floors, mosaics, paintings and carbonized woods can still be admired today. You will discover the ancient luxurious properties and villas including the House of the Mosaic , the House of Deer , the Thermae (baths) and the House of Carbonized Furniture . After a guided tour, you will be driven back to meet the yacht in Sorrento. Please note : This tour involves considerable walking on uneven pathways. Bring a sun hat, as shade is limited. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
